He had been with the 5th Argylls pre-war. He signed up and went to Woolwich for training, becoming an Armourer Sergeant with the AOC. He served with the Northamptonshire Rifles in France for over two years. he was then transferred to the RNR. The Imperial German Navy submarine SM U-65 sank Sarnia in the Mediterranean Sea off AlexandriaEgypt, (31°58′N 30°55′E) on 12 September 1918 with the loss of 55 crew
