John Hanlon

Son of George and Katherine Mulholland Hanlon. Born at Newcastle.

Husband of Mary Elizabeth Hanlon, 28 Ann Street, Greenock. Worked as a rigger previously with Caird & Co and Scotts before moving to the Torpedo Factory in 1911 to work as a labourer.

Honours

Distinguished Service Medal

Enrolled 1/10/1903. Was on the Carmania and won the DSM (Distinguished Service Medal) for his service on sinking the German Cruiser Cap Trafalgar. He was awarded prize money for this action.

He went on to serve on the Yacht Hecate, HMS Whitby Abbey and HMS Europa

Died from aortic disease aggravated by his war service, while on leave. His wife reported his death was the result of gas poisoning. His widow received a £50 gratuity in 1922
