Remembering those who fought in the Great War.

Gaelic Parish Church

GAELIC

In 1843, when Angus McBean and the congregation of the Gaelic Parish Church came out from the Establishment, they first worshipped in Duncan Street burying-ground, and afterwards for nearly a year in the Old West Kirk. Their church in Jamaica Street was opened in 1844. They removed to St Thomas' Church in 1910. Ministers - Angus McBean, 1843-5; John McRae, 1849-57; John Kennedy, 1859-70; M. Maccaskill, 1873-84; John Campbell, 1885; Don. Campbell, 1910.

Donald Campbell was at Malta for four months of the war as chaplain to the troops. He wrote letters to the local newspapers and on his return he gave a talk to a packed out church on his experiences there

We have identified as many of this congregation as possibly - though as you may realise - it can be difficult to distinguish between the man "Macs" that are inevitably part of a Gaelic Church. Also some of the dates seem to differ from dates we may have.
